Universities Helping in Katrina Aftermath

I’ve seen several reports of schools, colleges and universities who are lending a helping hand in the aftermath of Katrina. The systemic impacts of this storm are vast, and we are only beginning to be aware of them.

An elementary school in Atlanta has agreed to take in kids displaced by Katrina and to help them find housing while their parents get back on their feet.

Louisiana State University (LSU) has offered space to college students enrolled in New Orleans Universities for the semester. Georgia Tech made a similar offer. I’m sure the students of Tulane, Loyola and the University of New Orleans (where my uncle taught for years) will find some comfort in these invitations.

My alma mater Rhodes College in Memphis, TN just sent out a letter to alumni indicating the number of students and alums from the area and setting up a blog where anyone can post missing and found persons – http://rhodescollege.blogspot.com
They’ve also opened up a scholarship fund for current students whose families are affected by the hurricane.
