My family is now using Google Maps to locate reported breaches in New Orleans levees and their proximity to the homes of family and friends (17th Street Canal is flooding the Lakeview area, where my aunt’s house is; water is at 9-12 feet and still rising). And we’re using Google Alerts to scan for new information about the status of Bay St. Louis and Waveland, MS, two areas hardest hit by Katrina where we have friends and relatives. Interestingly the news media has focused on New Orleans but is reporting very little information so far on these smaller towns that got hit even harder. I hear from my family’s research that CNN and other media sources have had a difficult time accessing the area.
