Good News for Good News

I’ve been a fan of Google News for a couple of years now. However, I’ve always wanted Google to do a better job of prioritizing positive news to give it more equal weight alongside the ongoing stream of negativity that constantly streams from major media sources.

Well, Google News’ main algorithym doesn’t do that trick for us (yet), but the good folks at Google have given us the ability to do it for ourselves using the new Customize feature. By creating a custom news category, the service will round up all of the stories from thousands of publications around the world that pertain to the keywords that interest you. I created a custom category called “Good News” that has keywords like “positive, potential, creative, exciting, heart-felt, humane, loving”. Then I put my Good News up near the top of the page so I get a dose of the good stuff along with the bad every time I open my browser.
